Uncle Ray scores major brownie points..

Ray has known Rebecca since she was this size. Probably the longest, closest Chaires family friend that I know of. He is incredibly intelligent, kind, and can cook like nobodies business, and his specialty is desserts! (our sweet tooths are lucky to know him). Rays brownies are the best, and his company is even better. Im so happy to have Olive meet this amazing man.

Thanks Ray! (and hope your available for babysitting sometime.) You and Rachel can teach Olive all about Opera, Child Services, Cooking, and Palm Springs.

Day 2! part 2

Melissa and Jennifer stop by to say hello, and brought some beautiful flowers.

And quickly Olive made some new friends..

Day 2!

Day 2 I will always remember as the 'day reality sets in'.

Rebecca and I had just been up the night before, on constant watch for the faintest cry, moan, or whimper from little Olive. Plus the fact that our adrenalin was wearing off, and we were just flat out exhausted. and exhilirated. Not to mention she was recovering from a major surgery..

But the sun rose, and the birds chirped , and another beautiful day began..

Nurses stopped by, flowers arrived, packages came in. A doctor here, another test there, and the days momentum really got going.. Friends, family, feedings and phonecalls. It started to blur.

And we held on, but around 3 oclock that afternoon, we were both a little on the ropes. And just then I was pondering just how the hell can a parent live at this pace, but just as that happened, the 'tide went out' and soon it was just the three of us, just sleeping and smiling, and getting some much needed rest.

Three lovely ladies..!

Mom telling Olive about the day she was born, just like it was yesterday.

Uncle Paolo, the matchmaker who introduced Rebecca and I, tries to teach Olive the Stanford 'fight song'.

"I think she's a soccer fan."

And finally Dr. Nakashima. Our pediatrician/stand up comedian, checks out Olive and makes sure she has access to all my credit cards and bank accounts.. "You might as well surrender them now. She's gonna get them eventually" he explained.

Aunts and Uncles..

The newest Uncle on the block, Jason, stopped by to meet his niece.

The two had lots to talk about, and hit it off immediately.

Slowly, Jason became surrounded and was soon overwhelmed by a group of Grandmas. Fortunately, no one got hurt.

And speaking of Uncles, Uncle Kev and Aunt Catherine swung by.. (I see a lot of Tennis courts, golf courses, Downtown News events, and fab LA restaurants and Tam O' Shantars in this girls future).

Not soon after, Olive asked Kevin for some Tech support on her wireless laptop. (Poor Kev. Everyone wants something from a Tech support guy..)

The day is here..! part 3

And here is Olive's first portrait. I think she was telling me to take a hike with my camera..

Part Eskimo baby, part snow-cone, she was toasty and warm and ready to take on the world.

But whoa, whoa, whoa! Not before eating something, young lady.
(I sound like a dad already.. huh?)

And for two first timers, they were naturals.. It was amazing to watch the instincts kick in, and just watch them do what they needed to do..

And after that first hour of mommy/daddy/daughter time, we could not have kept the grandmas (and Megan) out any longer.. We actually locked the door and barricaded it with a table, but Rachel found a fire-axe and mom a sledgehammer and they just came through the wall.

(Aint nothing keeping them away from this grandchild.)

And just as easily as motherhood has come to Rebecca, these two got the grandma thing down in no time..

And then there is Megan. Amazing Megan.

Rebecca and her have been friends since the beginning of time. And I can tell Olive is going to learn a lot about her mom through the crazy stories that Megan tells her. They've been classmates, roommates, best mates, and now mom-mates. (If that is such a word). She has been such a big part of Rebecca's life, and now Olive's. And on this special day, she was there, just as anxious as the rest of us, and has been such a HUGE help before, during, and after this pregnancy. I just cannot thank her enough and look forward to spending more time with her and her family!

The day is here..! part 2

So we met Tracy, on the right, and she was the best nurse/partner you could ask for. She answered all our questions and got us all dressed up and ready to go.

Rebecca was taken down to the delivery room to 'hook up' with the anesthesiologist, while I was relegated to a lone chair outside of the room. I sat here for 15 long minutes, just me and my thoughts. (It actually was very calming) I could think of nothing but sending all the good energy I could do this little baby, about to join this world.

And while in a trance, I heard these feet running towards me down the hall. It was Dr. Dwight, all scrubbed in and ready to go. As he ran by he asked "So you ready to be a daddy in five minutes..? We're calling you in soon." And he ran into the room.

And this is where time stood still.

Tracy called me into a bright white room, with clean white little mosaic tiles and a lot of shiny aluminum railed equipment. Monitors and wires and trays with tools. Four aqua marine doctors surrounded a bed, and at the end was a lone stool, all for me.

I sat and saw Rebecca almost beaming. Her giant smile and big brown eyes happy and relaxed. What else do I remember? A big black thermometer sticker stuck on her forehead, and a boom box behind her playing a 70's dance song and the doctors talking about how relieved they were not to listen to another Michael Jackson track on the radio.

It was all rather casual and relaxed.

"Rebecca, can you feel that?" the Dr. asked.
"No. Not at all." she replied
"Ok. Lets go." the Doc ordered.

From where we were at, we could only really see each other. A big blue curtain was hung just at her chest so we could only listen to their 'Dr. speak' and the odd clanging of a tool or suction hose. All I could do was hold her outstretched, tied down hand, and keep her company.

"You guys are minutes away from meeting Olive...!" Dwight announced.

I looked over my shoulder and the clock said 3:08 pm.

And the odd thing about that clock. Well, it was the same clock I would stare at in my school days. And everyday I would pray for that clock, with super eager anticipation, to reach that magic time of 3:15 pm, when school let out for the day. I consider that the happiest time on the planet. And here I sat, with that same happy intensity, hoping for another 3:15 'fantastic moment'. (Oddly enough, Rebecca and I got married in England at precisely 3:15 pm. So this 'timing' was incredibly profound in my book).

"Erik, would you like to see the head?" Dr. Dwight just asked.

"Uh, yeah..!" I replied.

And I stood up and peaked over the curtain, and there were four doctors carefully leaning in and concealing any parts I didnt really need to see, and then I saw this little, gray, slimey, shiney, 'Olive head' just jutting out of her belly.. And I was in awe.

I ducked back behind the curtain and whispered "She's beautiful."

And on that cue, we heard the first little cry from our baby girl.

And that is when time just kicked into warp speed and there were suctions and adrenalin and crying and smiles and hand squeezing and kisses.

Little Olive was quickly taken over to the baby table, where some nurses toweled her off and kept suctioning out any extra fluids she may have had in her windpipe. And the more they did this, the louder and clearer those cries got. And we were over the moon.

Tracy called me over to meet the little girl,

and took my camera and gave me some cutting shears, and I cut the umbilical cord. (Which in my opinion, is a very weird way to make an acquaintance with someone..).

Anyways,, It was tougher than I expected, (or they had given me gag scissors). Well I finally got through.

And once that was sorted, the nurse bundled little Olive and quickly whisked her to meet mom.

The two of them bonded for a moment, and Rebecca got to kiss her and then once again, Tracy took my camera, handed me the baby, and snapped one of the most incredible photos I will ever look upon in my lifetime:

Wow.

This is that moment. That moment I will never forget.

The day is here..! part 1

And after a lovely little drive, we arrive at the magic building where we get to meet Olive for the first time..! Man it feels like we are driving to the airport to pick up a good, dear friend, arriving from some far off wonderful place.

Checking in!

We were originally scheduled for 9:30 am, but there were other mom's going through labor, and in situations much more critical than ours. So we just hung out in the holding room and texted y'all and watched Law and Order.

Nurses kept us posted, and we were bumped to 11, then 1:30, and just as we were thinking they were sending us home, they said, "Ok. We have an opening. Lets get dressed!"

So they whisked us to our lovely room and we began the pre-op. IV's, heart monitors, and funny gowns.. And the encouraging company of two 'soon-to-be-grandmas'.

And about 2:45 pm, it was showtime..
